Major gripes when performing systems analysis:
Most DC/Warehouse undergo changes in process/procedures and even systems installed – these changes in 90% of clients I dealt with were never recorded – I.e. new layout etc. Stock item allocations are changed and no records thereof made on paper again influencing storage and picking – even product sizes may change often resulting in changes to slot placement, again both packing and picking time is affected but more important – these affect bottom line profits directly.
Staff training is mostly non-existent or far too “generalized” and not targeted to actual activities taking place in the clients Warehouse/DC operations. For example the picker/packer/checker is not aware of where he fits in in the whole operation and how critical and costly in fact a mis-pick can be. Software systems are extremely “silo’d” – internationally acknowledged as a problem – which then requires other software purchases and generally a time consuming re-creation of reports etc. Training of staff, upgrading software etc is extremely costly and time consuming hence it is not often that Training/upgrading takes place – refer to data below. Soon we experience “bottle-necks” developing and head scratching starts – sometimes huge loss of hair as well taking place……also high staff turnover, inventory issues, low moral, high tension………and a pitiful balance sheet.
